Kazama
takes the cake, can he top it with icing?
The 2005 D1 Grand Prix final battle took place at the legendary Tsukuba Circuit.
The two potential candidates for this year’s series champion were Masao
Suenaga in the Amemiya Rx7, and Yasuyuki Kazama in the Kei Office Silvia. Kazama
held a big lead in the series until the 6th round, where Suenaga had closed the
point gap.
Suenaga fought his way up to the semi finals this round and went against Youichi
Imamura in the APEX Rx7. Nobushige Kumakubo of Team Orange was matched up against
Tatsuya Sakuma for the other semi final battle. Kumakubo lost the match due to
an unfortunate spin on his first run. The finals consisted of Imamura and Sakuma.
Imamura closed in on Sakuma all throughout the S turn, and stayed right on his
tail. Imamura had come up to first place in the Tsukuba Circuit Final round and
third overall in the points series.
At the end of the series, Kazama had stayed on top with 97 points but Suenaga
was just a hairline away at 96 points. Now that the points season is over and
the USA vs Japan All Star Event is just weeks away, the big question is will
Kazama take the crown once again at the notorious Irwindale Speedway?
Kazama and his famous green Kei Office S15 has defeated many US and Japanese
drivers at the Irwindale track. He has won first place in both the 2004 and 2005
D1GP opening rounds at Irwindale making him the candidate to do so again. “Kazama
owns the bank” said Keiichi Tsuchiya, D1 chief judge, while commentating
on the 05 race. Can he climb to victory once again? Will a new competitor challenge
him to take that honor? With a handful of new cars and new faces, the battles
will be fierce. Make it a point to be part of this memorable event! December
17th will go down in history as the best International drift battle of 2005.
